Referred

The quiet way lawyers win the clients they want

The problem
no one talks about

You’re a great lawyer. So why aren’t you getting more of the right clients?

You’ve tried the usual advice. LinkedIn, Google Ads, endless networking. It’s expensive, it eats your time, and when it does work, it hands you a new problem: hours on the phone with prospects who can’t afford you or don’t have a real matter.

The lawyers with more work than they can handle aren’t doing any of that.

The best work comes through referrals. But a referral alone no longer closes it. Prospects research you online first, and by the time they make contact, they’ve already decided whether to call. You’ll never know the ones who didn’t.

What you’ll learn

Referred is built on one observation: the lawyers who are consistently busy aren’t doing more marketing. They’re doing the right marketing, focused on referrals and the evidence that converts them.

The book gives you a framework in four parts:

  • Focus Set a revenue goal, define the clients you actually want, and stop chasing work that doesn’t fit your practice
  • Evidence Audit what prospects see when they research you, and build the proof that turns a referral into a phone call
  • Referrals Identify what triggers someone to need a lawyer like you, and map the partners who can refer them
  • Momentum Build a referral playbook of repeatable plays, and stay top of mind with the people who send you work

Nine exercises help you apply each idea to your own practice straight away.

Who this book is for

  • Partners and senior lawyers at firms that grow through relationships, referrals, and reputation
  • Lawyers who are excellent at what they do but don’t have a steady stream of the right work
  • Practitioners who’ve tried the standard marketing advice and found it doesn’t fit their reality
  • Anyone who’d rather build a referral-driven practice than grind away on social media

A conversation,
not a lecture

Referred is written as a conversation between two lawyers. Rosie, who’s struggling to grow her practice, and Kate, who’s figured it out. It’s how these ideas land best: talked through, not lectured.

The characters are fictional. The strategy is what actually works.

You can read it in about an hour.

About the author

Paul Evans

Paul Evans has spent more than 20 years helping lawyers get more of the work they actually want. He started his career leading marketing inside two of Australia’s fastest-growing law firms, building strategy from scratch and learning what it takes to get excellent lawyers who loathe self-promotion to actually contribute to business development.

He then founded Toro Legal Marketing, which has since worked with hundreds of firms and thousands of lawyers.

Today, he works exclusively with boutique and growing practices, the firms where partners are genuinely excellent at what they do but would rather let the work speak for itself.
